family owned and operated

We are proud to be a locally owned and operated family business, with more than 100 years of combined experience in the hardware industry in the community we all grew up in. Read our story!

HISTORY

In 1971, Oak Hill Hardware, then a Trustworthy Hardware, opened in Scarborough, ME. After a decade of successful business at Oak Hill as well as at Pond Cove Hardware, owners Pat and Harry Hughes opened Dunstan Hardware in West Scarborough. Shortly after Dunstan was established, the location at Pond Cove was closed. Oak Hill & Dunstan, which would become Ace Hardware stores, continued to thrive and became an important and trusted business in the community. In the early 2000s, Oak Hill expanded its sales floor by converting adjoining space in the same building. A 2019 renovation extended the sales floor and improved the functionality of the business office, and a pending renovation this fall will continue to improve operations further. Today, Oak Hill & Dunstan Hardware remain a staple in the community, dedicated to serving the residents of Scarborough and neighboring towns.

Dan Johnson, Owner and General Manager

Dan started out as a sales associate at Oak Hill Hardware in 1977. A strong and steadfast employee, Dan became the manager of Pond Cove Hardware in Cape Elizabeth (run by the same owners). He returned to Oak Hill as the manager when Pond Cove was closed in the mid-80s. Since then he grew to become the general manager of both remaining locations, and, in early 2014, he and Anne finalized the purchase of these stores! On the rare occasion Dan is not working, he likes spending time with his family and being in the out-of-doors. He can most reliably be found frequenting local coffee establishments an/or giving you a hard time.

Anne Johnson, Owner and Business Manager

Anne joined the hardware crew at Pond Cove Hardware in 1982, shortly after her marriage to Dan. A few years later, she moved to Dunstan Hardware to work as a part-time cashier while raising her young children. She left the store in the late 90s to follow another – and very successful – career path with Girl Scouts of Maine as the program director, during which time she pursued and earned her Master’s in Adult Education. Anne returned to Oak Hill to help run the business with her husband in 2008, with the two eventually purchasing the stores in early 2014, something she is very proud of and excited about! When she can be convinced to take a break, Anne loves being creative, spending time outdoors, teaching Scottish Country Dancing, and taking care of her grandson, Julian.

Dave Hobbs, Manager - Oak Hill

Emily Moss, Manager - Dunstan

Rebecca Wood, Director of the Operations Manager

As is true of many positions at the hardware store, Rebecca handles a couple of different areas of the business including marketing, accounts payable, community outreach, and managing and designing the gift area at Oak Hill. Her official title, Director of the Operations Manager, was bestowed upon her by Nate, the Operations Manager. There are even plaques of this decree in the office, cementing her status as the premier sibling. She also works as a freelance graphic designer and marketing consultant, and sings at venues across southern Maine.

Nate Johnson, Operations Manager

Nate began his tenure with Oak Hill & Dunstan Hardware as an associate at age 15. He quickly moved through the ranks and became manager of Dunstan in his mid-twenties. After a brief hiatus to focus on music and his wife’s photography business (Justine Johnson Photography), Nate returned to take the manager position at Oak Hill in 2012 and has served in several roles since. He enjoys spending his free time hanging out with Justine, their son Julian, and dog Mukow. He is an accomplished musician, writing and recording his own as well as for podcasts and short films.
